Winemaker Notes
The 2017 Dijon 667 Clone of Pinot Noir has a medium hue with aromas and flavors of cherry, black tea and warmed earth with a well acid-balanced mouthfeel. The lush rich and creamy mouthfeel on the palate is balanced nicely with a touch of mocha and toasty baking spices on the finish. Pair this delicious Pinot Noir with polenta covered in a mushroom sauce or slow cooked pork tenderloin in a wine reduction sauce.
Vineyard Notes
The vines at Jane’s Vineyard generally show moderate vigor in their growth habit, mainly due to the acidic, nutrient poor soil and good drainage from the gravelly loam. The Hulchica soil is shallow so we planted on rootstock that has a shallower rooting angle to match the soil profile. The Clone 667 block vine rows are oriented east/west so the grapes get more sun on one side, and therefore the picking decision is about finding the right balance.
Production Notes
The local record for precipitation was set during the winter and spring of 2016-2017 as waves of showers swept over northern California, resulting in twice what we normally get. Consequently, flowering and crop set was irregular with lower yields than average. The summer was warm to hot, with sunny days in the Russian River Valley punctuated by heat spikes, and elevated nighttime temperatures leading up to harvest.
